AQUATICS GB JUNIOR ELITE CHAMPIONSHIPS WRAP UP

Published Mon 21 Apr 2025

Some of Australia’s best young divers gained valuable international competition experience this month as they took on Britain’s top juniors at the 2025 Aquatics GB Junior Elite Diving Championships in Plymouth.

Making the most of the trip, that included a pre-event camp in London, where they trained at the London 2012 Olympics venue before heading to Plymouth for the four-day competition, Deanna Drake (NSW), Keira Wang (VIC), Eleanor Williams (WA), Jasmine Wallcroft (WA), Lachlan Abbott (NSW) and Hayden Brinckley (NSW) have returned home with knowledge, experience and even more determination for future success than ever before.

New South Wales athlete Hayden Brinckley’s luggage also had some sparkling new hardware after securing two silver medals in the Boys B (14-15 years) 3metre Springboard and Boys B Platform while Victorian Keira Wang’s strong performances on the springboard, secured her a silver medal in the Girls A (16-18 years) 1metre and a 10th in the final of the 3metre.

Wang said that her results could be attributed to the implementation of a strict competition routine and a positive mindset.

“British Nationals really helped me realise what I need and what works best for me while I am competing.

I found that staying positive and happy helped me perform at my best and I look forward to using my new routine in future competitions,” Wang said.

Teammates Deanna Drake and Eleanor Williams took on the 3metre synchro for the first time together after being newly matched by the Coaching Team at the National Camp last month in Brisbane.

My highlight of the trip was competing in the synchro with Ellie for the first time,” said Drake.

“Although we didn’t compete at our best and certainly didn’t get the result we were hoping for, it was still a great experience and I’m looking forward to diving with Ellie again.”

For Eleanor, in her second international competition since 2023, the overall competition experience was invaluable, just missing the podium in both the Girls A 1m and 3m Springboard finals with 4th place finishes.

“One takeaway from this trip for me was learning how to be adaptable during competition, as well as having a pre and during-comp routine and actually sticking to it,” she said.

For Lachlan Abbott, the Aquatics GB Junior Elite Championships were his last competition as a junior athlete.

“It has been an incredible experience, travelling with such an awesome team and experiencing different training environments,” he said.
