AUSSIES TO GO HEAD-TO-HEAD IN SUPER FINAL

Published Mon 28 Apr 2025

Some of Australia’s best divers will take on the World Cup Super Final in Beijing this weekend with a new head-to-head format introduced by World Aquatics changing up the action.

The top 12 divers from combined rankings from the World Cup events in Guadalajara, Mexico and Windsor, Canada will go up against each other in the newly created competition with draws and placings pitting athletes against each other through the rounds.

Maddison Keeney was Australia’s highest ranked diver placing 3rd in the Women’s 3m Springboard and she will dive off in the first round against 10th place Cuban, Anisley Garcia Navarro. Alysha Koloi ranked 7th overall after the two World Cups has a tough first round competitor 6th ranked Sayaka Mikami (Japan).

The men’s platform will be a battle of the Aussies with Cassiel Rousseau going head-to-head against his teammate, Jaxon Bowshire in the battle of 6th versus 7th.

Our platform divers in women’s field have tough draws with Laura Hingston going against Italian star, Sarah Jodoin De Maria with up-and-coming Australian diver Ellie Cole drawing the formidable Gabriele Agundez Garcia from Mexico.

Diving Australia’s High Performance Director Steve Foley said the new format was full of twists and turns.

“With plenty of prize money at stake along with personal and national pride, tactics with dive list order could play an important part in advancing to the next round,” he said.

“We are also well represented in two of the four synchro events and the Mixed Team event, and these will be straight finals. Maddi Keeney and Alysha Koloi on 3m synchro are expected to challenge for a Podium place whilst Ellie Cole / Ruby Drogemuller will continue to gain invaluable synchro experience in the 10m synchro event.”

The World Aquatics Diving Super Final Format
The new two-hour format will feature a head-to-head stage, semi-final and final. In the head-to-head stage, divers will be paired based on their seeding. Each will choose three dives to perform and the lowest scorer in each pairing will be eliminated, with six athletes advancing to the semi-final.

Points from the head-to-head will carry over to the semi-final stage, featuring two groups of three divers competing against each other. Athletes will complete the remaining dives from their full list, with the lowest scorer in each group eliminated to leave four who progress to the final.

Results from the first two stages will be wiped for the final, and each diver will perform their full list to determine the World Aquatics Diving World Cup – Super Final medallists.
